After the crazy winter we had I for one am happy that Spring is finally here.
Growing season is upon us now that the last frost date was yesterday here in zone 7. What do you plan on growing this year? Anything new that you haven't ever grown before? All of our growing areas are ready to go and some spots have already been seeded. We still need to transplant tomatoes, peppers and squash yet. Some of the seedlings are still in the house and need to be hardened off before going outside for good. I'm excited to hear about what everyone is doing or planting! Happy gardening everyone!

Did anyone else have crazy weather like we had over the winter?
The storms rolled in at least 2 times a week so it stuck around way longer than it normally would. Three different times I measured 9 inches of snow on top of my car. This is the most snow northern Arizona has seen in a few decades. Plus I-40 was closed more then I can ever remember. What a blessing to have that much moisture! Hopefully it will help come gardening season. Stop by Zettlers Route 66 Store 242 Lewis Ave Ash Fork, AZ and pick up some of our yummy goodies Friday to Sunday 10 am to 4 pm.
We have a variety of homemade baked goods, homemade jams, bbq dry rubs, spices, candied walnuts, spicy pistachios, plants and seedlings plus gift baskets created by me. (I also do special orders) My friends also have homemade soaps, candles, wax melts, handmade girls hair bows, handmade aprons, handmade jewelry, seed starter kits, crocheted clothes, ceramic mugs/bowls/vases and homemade dog treats. Plus eggs from chickens and ducks in the Ash Fork area. The store itself has lots of cool stuff to see too. After picking everything to save it all from freezing I’m dealing with some crazy kitchen chaos. Our table is filled with pumpkins, watermelon, tomatoes, peppers and tiny cantaloupe. The kitchen counter also has tomatoes, onions and jars with seeds fermenting.
Slowly the chaos is calming day by day since I’m finding places for the store the bounty until I can do something with it. I’ll share more as I process everything. Thank you all for stopping by. Blessings all! Unfortunately it’s that time of year where the temperatures can swing from freezing to 70 degrees in a few hours. We have been working on the gardens picking anything that will freeze overnight. Yesterday I was able to pick over 50 lbs of Roma and Round (cherry) tomatoes from the lower garden area. The pepper plants and marigolds were dug up and relocated to the pallet raised beds in hopes of extending the season for them. Vegetables like carrots, turnips and peas we won’t do anything with just leaving them in the ground. Blessings all! Monsoon 2022 has blessed us with lots of rain this year and we haven’t had to water in over 2 weeks now. Of course the bark, cardboard and straw has helped hold moisture in the soil.
We’ve harvested some tomatoes and a few hot peppers so far but as you can see from the pictures there lots of things growing (in the lower garden area). The upper garden area still seems to be behind but is still doing well, we are hoping for a good harvest from up there before the weather changes. Blessings to you all! You can still plant crops now for a fall garden. Cool weather crops such as Did you know that some crops can be grown in 60 days or before the weather turns cold such as- Herbs can be grown in pots and taken inside during the winter. Having fresh herbs during the cold months are wonderful especially during the holidays.
If you don’t have a place to garden start with 1 or 2 pots and grow something. A sunny window is a great location. Happy Fall Gardening! Are you looking forward to fresh vegetables and herbs? Within 2 weeks we should have tomatoes, hot peppers, fresh mint, chives. Things we are growing that aren't quite ready are baby watermelon, Rosemary, Sage, Peas, Cucumbers and Bell Peppers.
These items when available (and more) can be purchased every Sunday in the parking lot of Family Dollar from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ash Fork, AZ. Weather permitting. While in the upper garden area I was able to capture a moth pollinating our cucumber plant. It doesn’t happen very often being able to get video of this process but I’m grateful. https://youtube.com/shorts/TdzARC4OAak?feature=share
